Do Brits And Americans Perfectly Understand Each Other, Despite Of The Accent And Grammar Differences ?

I've noticed that it was very different, but it seems that US movies are displayed in original versions in UK theaters. And is british movie "Casino Royale" also shown in his original version in the US ? Is the difference as huge as the Quebec french/France french, as the Spain spanish/Mexico spanish, for instance ?EDIT : of course, the question deals also with Australia, New-Zealand, Canada, South-Africa,etc...

I just saw the movie Kes, which takes place in 1960s northern England; I understood the movie fine, but I probably missed about 20% of the words. :) I don't have any trouble with any other accents as long as they're not super thick, and the Canadian accent is almost identical to the regular American one. And to answer the Casino Royal question (splendid movie), yes. :)

The accent is easy enough to understand, but sometimes they use words that I'm not familiar with at all, and vice versa. When I asked for a restroom in England, no one has any idea what I'm talking about...I had to ask for a toilet. And when they offered me biscuits as a snack, I might have accepted if I had realized they were talking about cookies!

  • Most of the time, the various English-speaking people understand each other quite well.
  • It's only when regional slang comes into the mix that understanding fails.
  • Of course, with the pervasiveness of American entertainment, everybody who speaks English understands the vast majority of American slang, but the reverse is not always true.
  • When in doubt, ask.
  • As for movies, yes, UK films are almost always shown in their original version.
  • The only exception I've encountered is Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, while is Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone in the UK.
  • The change was due to the fact that the story of the Philosopher's Stone is not widely known in the US.
    • generally we understand perfectly well, however sometimes i can be awkward on purpose, depending on what mood i'm in ;).
    • this can include, when i'm talking to an american, speaking fast in my local accent, which if the person is nice, i try to avoid doing (see, i can be kind :))

2007-12-05 06:33:00 Adelle-Alliman says: I understand American's perfectly. Infact, sometimes it is even hard to tell if they are American or British.
